Calendar Girls: The Musical
Written by Take That frontman Gary Barlow with Tim Firth, Calendar Girls: The Musical retells the heart-warming true story of a group of Women’s Institute members who posed nude in a calendar which raised millions for blood cancer charities. The story inspired the 2003 film of the same name and starred Julie Walters and Helen Mirren.
In DMTC’s production, Ren Forteath plays Annie, whose life is turned upside down when her husband John, played by Neil Webster, is diagnosed with cancer and dies shortly afterwards. In an attempt to give Annie a positive focus, her best friend, florist Chris played by Sharron Harper, embarks upon a creative mission to fundraise for a visitors’ sofa for the local hospital by posing for a nude calendar.
Despite initial scepticism, Chris soon persuades fellow members of the Knapely branch of the Women’s Institute to join in. Among these are rebellious church organist Cora played by Rhona Davidson; Heather Brown as glamorous ex-air hostess Celia and the usually shy and compliant Ruth played by Alison Donnelly. Nina Rennie as Jessie the outspoken, no-nonsense elder stateswoman of the WI. What starts as a wayward fundraising idea soon becomes a tale of personal growth and challenge, and ultimately a celebration of love, friendship, resilience and female solidarity, all while honouring John’s memory.
